Yes you can, all ya need to do is rinse it out one or two times, making sure you clean out the insides of the filter too. Also, when you asked: If you need aquarium salt fo some freshwater fish, will it be ok?, I'm guessing you meant aquarium salt to help cure disease, that's fine, but if you plan on putting mollies in, you need to use marine salt, probably on about a tablespoon per two gallons of water, these fish need salt because they live in an environment called brackish water which is a mix of salt and freshwater combined. If you have any other questions ask hear or always join a fish forum; two great ones are fishlore.com and I HIGHLY recommend badmanstropicalfish.com. Good luck and I hope I helped!!

yes you can ... my first 30 gallon tank ran as a salt water tank for years before i got it ... i rinsed it out and filled it up and all was well ... very few fish require aquarium salt but if you do have fish that need it, it won't be a problem ...

It'll be fine. Just make sure you wash it thoroughly and to not use the same filter cartridges.

As mentioned previously, separate all the parts and let them sink in boiled water to kill any bacteria.

The best way to clean all the tank's accessories is with boiling water from the kettle as this will destroy all bacteria that is on the products, place all the products in a bucket and cover the products with the boiling water.
leave the items until the water turns cool, this usually can take from 1-3hours.
with the gravel or pebbles it is best to do this 1-3times as bacteria and fungi cells can live much better in the gravel than they can on ornimantes.

Boil them for a short time. That pretty much sterilizes everything. If it's something you can't boil for some reason, soak it for 3 or 4 hours in solution of bleach as you would for clothes. Then keep it under running water for about 2 hours. That is how they prepare corals for fish tank decoration if they were recently alive.

If this is a reef tank with fish then you have to let someone you trust help you while you are gone... but if this is a fish only tank the you can always do a massive (75%) water change right before you leave and move your lighting farther away from the rim of the tank to reduce water evaporation. While doing the water change bring your salinity to 1.020 to anticipate for the evaporation. Turn down your thermostat to about 75* so that the fishes metabolisim drops so they wont be as food dependant. After the water change setup and cheap automatic fish feeder setup on your rim... I think you can get one for 5.00 or so that run on a 9v battery. That will keep your fish fed for the time you are away but when you get back make damn sure to do another massive water change and slowly bring your salinity and temp back to normal.
Good luck and I know this worked for me for 2 weeks...

three weeks is rough, your going to need a trusted friend, preferably one thats smart enough to know their incompitance could cost you a lot of money, make sure you mark a fill line on the sump or refugium so they know where to fill it too, make sure you leave 21 feeding for the caretaker do a heavy water change and clean all your filters and sponges the day or morning before you leave, leave detailed instructions for the care taker and explane that if they have any questoins about something to either call you or leave it be, aside from feeding and evaporation, alot of things are better not done at all than done wrong
